Gaming Journal: Dark Souls, Vol. 1

The days are short, the nights are long...

What is that over there? Looks like a Knight but he's wearing a red cape. His back is turned, maybe I can sneak up behind him and backstab him, something I've yet to do correctly, and take whatever loot he's guarding. Slowly...slowly...A HA! *another failed backstab attempt* Oh no, that didn't work...oh...oh...SHIT, HE'S CHASING ME! I'm out of fire spells, I'm...

"YOU DIED!"

My experience with Dark Souls, so far, has been one of great frustration but also immense satisfaction and addiction. Replaying areas over and over again has never been so much fun. I guess the thing that keeps me going (and I'm still so early in the game) is knowing that I will get over whatever keeps killing me. Just getting to new areas is satisfying because consistent, tangible progress is difficult to come by. Once you finally beat that bitch of a boss and come across that new bon fire, or checkpoint, you can't help but feel amazing.

The gameplay in Dark Souls is not for those of us who like to rush in and wreck shit. This is not Devil May Cry. Rush and precede to get your ass handed to you. You must be patient, vigilant, and patient. Did I mention you have to be patient? I can't tell you how many times I have died because I thought I had the upper hand, got cocky, and then got a spear to the face. Be prepared. Do not go running down a corridor or into an open space all willy nilly. You probably won't like who's waiting for you. Also, and this is very important: be aware of your surroundings!!! You will accidentally roll off of a bridge or a cliff at some point in this game. Trust me, it will happen. Next time I play, maybe I should take my own advice.

Like I said, I'm still pretty much in the very early stages of the game. I'm not even 10 hours in. If I didn't have a job, I'd probably be a zombie by now from all the hours played. Seeing as it's a Sunday, I would like to get some good hours in today. For those playing the game (I know there's at least one of you!), I'm in the Undead Parish and I've already defeated the armored boar. I got to what looks like the courtyard of a church before dying because I was wielding a weapon I didn't have complete control over yet. -_- I need to get my stats up. And so I shall!

Praise the sun!

Yay! *Sits down and gets comfortable*

Where did you get that Black Knight Sword from?! One of those crazies with the red capes? Or that massive dude with the mace?! I hope it's not the latter, because when I beat him (spammed him with bombs and magic lol) all he dropped was this lousy titanite :( I think I'm in need of a new sword now, 'cos I'm still rolling with my Longsword+2 that I found in the Burg. (About to be +4 'cos I've just found a blacksmith)

I don't mind fighting the Knights in the red capes now...initially I thought I was supposed to avoid them 'cos they look a little like mini bosses, but they don't actually have very much HP, you've just gotta be patient and wait for the right openings in their defence. And using the riposte is way too risky because it doesn't kill them in one hit like it does the peons.

And what bonfire are you using? I've just found another one, but before that I was using the one behind the gate where our friend Toasty the Dragon was sitting. I just waited for him to fly onto the bridge then ran through his legs and toward the gate and made it there without so much as a scratch! Much easier making your way through the Parish from there rather than having to climb up the ladder from the Burg and deal with those bloody rats (UGH!) over and over...

I want to. But I can't. I just can't. I can barely make my way through Arkham asylum let alone this game!

I never tried that way, going straight through the dragon to the gate. Hmmm...now I have something else to attempt! The bon fire I'm using is still the one in the dead burg but now the ladder next to it is kicked down, so it's kind of a shortcut to the area underneath where the dragon is (where you fight those damn rats).

And, yeah, the guys in the red capes go down pretty easy with fire. OH, the black knight sword, right. Yeah, it's those guys with the awesome armor and big swords (think they're the same ones in my picture in the post below). I got the titanite but ALSO the sword. I think I just got lucky because I don't think it's that common of a drop.

It sounds like you're a bit farther than me. I'm about to start playing again!

And, J. My friend. For the love of Lordran, Batman is not that difficult. :P It sounds like you don't like to sneak. This game isn't for the faint of heart but I think it's worth it. I say that now but I haven't even made it to the game's really brutal enemies yet.

*boots up Dark Souls*

I think I know what the black knight is - there's one in the tower at the beginning of the Undead Parish right? I think there's one in the Burg too. Anyway I killed one of those a little while ago (spammed him with magic LOL) and all he dropped was a Titanite chunk (rather than a shard) so I might head back to the burg and see if I can get the other one I saw to drop the sword/armor for me. Not sure why I'm gonna attempt it though, 'cos judging by the size of the sword it's gonna take me ages to level up to wield it effectively.

My character build is an absolute mess - it always happens in RPG's where I spend points on STR/DEX/MAG etc. rather than try to do one thing effectively, I try to be a jack of all trades and try and level everything up rather than focus on doing one thing well. Think I'm gonna pump some souls into strength and endurance and bulk myself up a little...I dunno why I picked a Thief, 'cos I play like a Warrior/Knight.

And J?

"The first is that I need to just buy more games. Forget using metacritic as a gauge which games to buy. If I like the look of something and I feel it may be up my alley, buy it. If there's a game everybody raves about, but it's not my thing, at least try it."

I say go for it :]

I'm using a Halberd+2 as my weapon right now and it is BOSS! I'm making those fencing dudes look like bitches with it. I think about I'm about to ring the first bell at the top of the church in the undead parish but I've been kind of having fun just killing things with my Halberd.

My main goal, besides progressing in the game obviously, is to get my str and dex up to 20 and 18 so I can actually wield that Black Knight Sword. It's base damage is at least 200. I'm not sure if you can level it, though. That'd be nice.

*sigh*

Still don't have a Black Knight Sword...

*frowns at Junlee*

Don't know what to tell ya, Albee. I think I just got really lucky. I've read it's not a very common drop. *shrugs*

Hope you finally get something for all your hard work, lol. In other news, I went to ring the first bell at the church and the two gargoyles on the roof keep raping me, lol. I went to the Darkroot Gardens and Basin to try and level a bit and I got my Halberd up another level, along with my actual level. I really want to grind more to get my str and dex up enough so I can actually weild that damn black knight sword! But I also just want to ring that freakin' bell already.

*continues to glare at Junlee*

I hope I find one of those swords soon! I beat the one in the Burg and he dropped more Titanite *cries*

Now I'm not usually one to toot my own horn, but I managed to beat the Gargoyles on my second attempt! I was really over levelled though. Level 30 I think? I did some serious grinding against those Red Knights because I really wanted the whole set of armour that they wear and one of their swords also. 100+ Red Knights later and I finally got the sword, a few levels and about 3 sets of their armour lol. The armour kinda sucks though, because although the Knights have the cape - when a player wears it the cape is torn. Guess the developers thought it'd distract the player with that blowing around all the time. :[

Also did you get the Drake Sword from destroying Toasty's tail? I imagine using that sword would help a lot considering it's quite powerful. I didn't use it against the Gargoyles because I wanted to feel some sense of achievement by doing it with a lower tiered sword considering how high my level was. Failing that, get yourself into human form and summon some help!

Have you been invaded yet?

Junlee said...

Level 30?! I'm only level 16! XD And how exactly did you get the Drake Sword? I know you're supposed to shoot the tail, which I've done, but how do you actually get the sword? Does it fall down under the bridge where you shoot it or do you have to go up to where he's shooting the fire? Because whenever I've tried to run and get what's on the ground, I get burnt to a crisp. :(

Sounds like I seriously neeed to level, lol.

Albee said...

Just go under the bridge where he likes to incinerate everything and shoot about 30 odd arrows at his tail from the right side (could possibly be 40 - I don't really remember. Take 50 to be on the safe side). It can take a bit of time because everytime you shoot his tail successfully, he flies onto the bridge, has a sniff around then flies back to his original position. After you destroy his tail you'll get a notification and the sword will automatically be added to your inventory. Also when you fight the Gargoyles, destroy the first ones tail if you haven't already and you'll also get a weapon from doing that too :]

Thanks for the tips! I'm finally about to get back into it after I finish this scary movie I tried to watch on Netflix last night before passing out (the meds I'm on made me late for work this morning!). Afterwards, it's killing time!

And I mean me...getting killed.

Junlee said...

Oooh, Albee. You're going to be mad at me.

I just killed another black knight and he didn't just drop a black knight sword, but a black knight GREAT sword. This thing is huge! My stats are nowhere near where they need to be to wield this thing.

Junlee said...

Finally got my stats up to wield the black knight sword! I've level 23 and my BKS is +1 with an attack of 225. I'm going to slay them gargoyle bitches later tonight!
